I would rate Supergirl a 7 on IMDB. I love superhero movies. It's my favorite genre and I'll watch a super-based film regardless of what any lynch mob says. After the film, I started making a few spoiler-rich, stream-of-consciousness notes, mostly focusing on some of the things that bothered me.
- As viewers, we should feel comfortable calling Kara a girl, as in Supergirl. Having a sidekick who looks like she's 10 years old made (the very young but disheveled) Milly Alcock look so much older in comparison - often vibing as a doting mother instead.
Also teaming up with someone so young - with no conception of how the world works - felt jarring all movie long. Maybe they were after some kind of Arya Stark/GoT vibe but it failed. The girl literally had her "play" sword taken away by some bullies at a bar early in the film.
If the kid disappeared at this point, it would have made for a better film. Kara would show up in the end and tell her the family's killer was taken care of and return her father's sword.
- Every time Kara answered Ruthye Knoll's questions, it bothered me. There was zero connection between the characters and yet Kara felt compelled to tell this little girl all about her past and even her weaknesses - while the girl's always bland expression (lack of acting ability?) felt like she didn't care what Kara was saying.
- The sidekick made up for lots of her earlier annoyances by saving Supergirl on that planet.
- The villain was cartoonish. The way he had that constant smile while he slowly stalked after his victims. His men could be getting killed, his ship destroyed, Supergirl slamming everyone, Lobo crushing it, mayhem everywhere... and he seemed oblivious to all of that. He just kept slow-stalking with a grin on his face. He reacted to everything around him the same way - usually focused on just a single person in that NPC way.
Even when he killed people, it didn't feel villainous - there was no drama, no malice, no effective build-up. He just quickly sliced/diced - and kept smiling, walking and reading his uninspired generic lines. The film's biggest failure. He offered zero counterbalance to Supergirl's complexity.
- Lobo was a bright spot. He lived up to his potential, the on-screen charisma was there, he delivered on his lines. His influence on the story's plot was minimal. He was there to showcase the character.
- Supergirl klling the villain at the end was great! (I loved that Lobo saw it and approved). I'm a fan of anti-heroes. I had a great time reading a bunch of comics (not too long ago) that focused on heroes "breaking bad". She joins the same kind of mindset established for the Justice League in the 2025 Superman movie. I so much want to see more of this kind of Supergirl.
- The plot started off weak. Supergirl was forced into the story by having the villain randomly drug her dog and conveniently giving her 3 full days to find an antidote. That's human-level, low-effort grifting slop. I grudgingly accepted this beginning and by doing so, the rest of the plot worked.
- Milly Alcock is great as Supergirl. She can play angry, wild, drunk, anti-hero... and even segue into vulnerable or innocent. She has the acting range and natural facial gestures to pull off the nuances of a complete character. I so much want to see her again.
I also so much want to see her lead a Justice League that can match her energy and imperfections. DC did not fail in how they depicted her. Most fans understand that people can come from the same place (Kal-El, Kara Zor-El, Dru-Zod) and have distinct personalities. Nearly 70% of the fans on IMDB rated the film a 6.0 or higher (as of 01jul2026). That's a win!
Too many fans want an idealized Norman Rockwell kind of Supergirl while they actively try to create a dystopia in the real world for everyone else. We know what you are.
If you were planning on watching Supergirl before the over-the-top (politically charged) Kaitlin Klark Klan type of lynch mob and their vile garbage, you should 100% see it - especially now. As a superhero fan, I'm glad I did. My biggest takeaway...
I want to see Milly Alcock as Supergirl again with all the depth, vulnerability, humanity and physical appeal she brings to the role.
