September 1752 skipped 11 days in the British Empire (including American colonies) when switching from the Julian to Gregorian calendar.
What happened:
- Wednesday, September 2, 1752 was followed by Thursday, September 14, 1752
- 11 days removed: September 3-13, 1752 never existed
- Reason: Julian calendar was 11 days out of sync with solar year
- Countries affected: Britain, colonies (US/Canada weren't independent yet)
Why:
- Julian calendar (since 45 BCE) had drifted
- Gregorian calendar (1582) fixed leap year rules
- Catholic countries adopted in 1582
- Protestant Britain resisted until 1752
Result: Calendar caught up by deleting 11 days. People went to bed September 2, woke up September 14.
